The Falkirk Wheel is part of the Scottish Canal System. It is an ingenious design. Normally, if you need to raise a boat to another level, you use a lock. But what do you do if you need to raise boats a LOT. A lock could be made to do it, but it is impractical.
This gem of a design uses the power of water to rotate a large wheel raising a boat to the upper canal or lowering a boat to the lower canal. It is an amazing thing to watch, and requires very little power other than the power of the water.
